Virtual Job Tryout-style: explanation and free practice

The Virtual Job Tryout is a simulated working day of about 30 minutes. You receive emails, chats and situations from colleagues, choose how to respond, work with figures, schedules and emails, and answer questions about your work style. At Shell an on-demand video interview of 10 to 15 minutes follows straight after; you have 7 days to complete both (Shell invitation, 2026). This practice test recreates the working day with our own tasks at a fictional energy company. Practise the video interview under Interview: choose Shell there.

A day on the job Work situations (Virtual Job Tryout style)
8 situations · ± 10 minutes (suggested) · most and least effective

You have just started as a graduate at Northwind Energy. Messages arrive during your day. For each one, choose the MOST and the LEAST effective response.

Tip: At energy companies safety weighs heaviest: if you see unsafe work, you step in. Next: be honest and transparent, involve the right people and bring a solution instead of passing the problem on. The worst response is usually looking away, hiding something or blaming someone else.

Inbox and data tasks Inbox and data (Virtual Job Tryout style)
8 tasks · 12 minutes · calculator allowed

Work through the tasks in your inbox. Use the tables, emails and calendars to choose the right answer. You may use a calculator.

Tip: Read the question first, then the table or email: then you know what you are looking for. In calculations the formula is often given in the task; use exactly that one. When scheduling: first cross out everything that is impossible (room, time), then check the calendars.

Work style Work style (Virtual Job Tryout style)
24 pairs · ± 5 minutes · no time limit

For each pair, choose the statement that describes you better. There are no right or wrong answers.

Tip: Answer honestly: the real test compares you with a profile of good performers in the role and spots contradictory answers. If you pretend to be someone else, it will show in the interview. Do know which qualities this employer values (safety, honesty, teamwork, learning), so you do not needlessly pick the opposite when both describe you.
